Yes, it works! I put a msata SSD with this adapter in a laptop to replace a PATA HDD. It was detected right away and I installed the OS on it without any issues. It is physically smaller than the 2.5 HDD it replaces, so it is not very secure in the drive bay. I cannot judge the speed since laptops with PATA disks are by definition old and slow.
